Exchange
The peso is the legal tender in Mexico. The banks and money exchanges
offices offer competitive rates and are open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Language
Spanish is the official language in Mexico. Usually, personnel in the
Riviera Maya's hotels, shops, restaurants, and tourist industries speak
or understand English. If you know some Spanish, do not hesitate to try
it, it's the best way to make new friends among Mexico's warm, friendly
people.
Transportation
The easiest way to get around Mexico's Riviera Maya is by taxi or local
bus. Fares are low, but they increase after 10:00 PM Tipping taxi drivers
is custom ary.
Shopping
Most stores in Playa del Carmen and the Mayan Riviera are open Monday
through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM If you plan to buy silver,
it is very important to make sure that the back of each piece is stamped
with .925 (sterling silver) or .720 (20% less sterling silver).
Local Cuisine
The most common dishes along the Caribbean Coast of Mexico include fish
and sea food, of course. There are many restaurants offering international
and typical Mexican cuisine. If you are not familiar with Mexican salsas
and spices, just make sure not to have a hot surprise.
Water
Most hotels have water filters and purified tap water. Ice cubes are
also safe to use. And you can always buy a bottle of purified water in
the tobacco shop of your hotel, to take with you when you go out.
 Restaurants,
Bars and Discotheques
Travelers should consider making reservations at popular restaurants
in order to be secure availability. There is a wide choice of discotheques
where you can enjoy yourself.
Valuables
It is not advisable to carry all your cash and credit cards, or plane
tickets, passport and personal documents, when you go out. Take only what
is necessary, and keep the rest in a safe in your hotel. Mexico is a very
safe destination, but losing money or documents is never a pleasant experience.
